In the weeds again

Was anybody here AT this race? It was one of my first Sebrings and I don't remember a whole lot. We camped out at the hairpin, actually hiked over to the airport FBO for breakfast and saw the cars in the paddock.
However, at the time I didn't know much about sports car racing.
But it was the early days at Sebring that got me hooked.

That would have been my 11th 12 Hours.  It's all a blur.  That was around the time of the big crackdown on nudity and lacivious behavior.

You've only got to spend 5 minutes on sebringfans.com to realize that, while many of them may be knowledgeable fans, this race is mostly a drinking binge with some noisy cars in the background.
The focus (on that site) on alcohol consumption is really kind of depressing. I'm kind of amazed (and disappointed) that track management doesn't do anything to try and go a bit more upmarket.
If I wanted to hang with drunken louts I'd go to a British premier league game.

I was in the Navy in Pearl Harbor, HI in '81 ... but I remember some of the pictures from Green Park made it into Hustler.  (Sex on top of RV's, etc.)  As a result the crackdown (no pun intended) on "lewd and lavicious' behavior...

I also believe that is about the time they stopped the motorcycles from riding openly anywhere they want. I remember sleeping in my tent when one clipped the corner and about took the tent down..........The good side to those years was there was much more camping ground available. I camp near the hairpin near the track enterance rather than crossing over to greenpark.
We are all but squeezed out with just some minor areas to camp now because of all the roped off areas.........I'll soon be joining all you crazies in greenpark soon........Rick

My first Sebring.
DNF for much of the time. Pictures still show up around the party barge.
I do remember going with my friend from work. I remember his hot daughter. I still remember his hot daughter. Going to see her there again this year.  Still hot!!! Made many of my best friends at Sebring.
Remember the little wire fence and the ditch to keep us off the track? The real hairpin, the long straight past what is now turn 10.  The old pits. The glow of the turbo on the 934s at night? Classic car champagne partys in the old blue hangar? Riding in the old Morgan +4 with my friend.
They have all been good, but that was a great one.

I remember some 911s that you could see all 6 pipes in the headers glowing.

What year was it that the lead 962 had to change a turbo in the last hour?  I was on top of somebody's camper across the front straight from the pit.  The mechanics dumped water on it and were wearing welder's gloves.

Not Sebring and not '81, but I saw this video a few minutes after reading this post.  Talk about glowing pipes:

1999....BMW won....I was freshman in college and it was spring break....Dad never took me when I was younger because it was so wild.  He had been since '85....I think AJ Foyt was racing then.  Now I am hooked. I go every year with a crew (and there hooked).

Beer Town USA

SEBRING....It's not a life experience.  It's a CULT!
