DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- About 20 people were caught trying to sneak into handicapped parking sections during a crackdown on motorists illegally looking for the best parking spots at the Daytona International Speedway for this weekend's racing events, according to Local 6 News.

This year, the Florida Highway Patrol and NASCAR are cracking down on scams to illegally use handicapped parking spaces at the Daytona International Speedway, Local 6 News reported.

Thursday, racing fans were caught faking that they were handicapped by using another person's car sticker and even making homemade handicap signs to fool officials, Local 6 News reported.

"The Pepsi 400 has not gotten under way yet and Florida Highway Patrol just told me that yesterday they caught 16 people trying to weasel their way into the handicap section who did not belong there," Local 6 News Jessica Sanchez reported.

Officials with the Department of Motor Vehicles will be checking handicapped stickers through the Fourth of July weekend, according to the report. Officials will also be running driver's license checks to determine whether the owner of the handicap sticker is really using it at the race.

"We just want people to do the right thing," Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Kim Miller said. "If you are taking a handicap spot from someone and you are able to walk from the other parking lots or take the tram, we want you to do that. We want those spots there for people who truly need them."

Normally, a fine for parking in a handicapped space is $200, but drivers caught using a fake sticker, faking a disability or using someone's handicapped sticker will be fined $1,000, according to the report.
