Great news about Porsche and Penske hooking up...my biggest question is why LMP2 and not 1? I'm sure they have been working on this for a while, so do they know something we dont? They must think the future is in LMP2. I know LMP2's  are capable of winning overall, but is this just a jumping point to LMP1 or do you think they are going to sit in LMP2 for a while?

IMHO. LMP2 is a slightly harder category withh thhe restrictions but everyone has a sot to win that category. Mazda jumped in this weekend at the GP of RA and came in second. If you can put together a car that can be competitive and not break you have a chane at winning that category.

Why would you want to join LMP1 and loose every week to a audi?

I think it is a calculated move on Porsches part.

1. Enter LMP2 and more than likely win right out of the box, boosting customer sales.
2. When Audi (Porsches sister company) retires the R8, jump into LMP1 with more horsepower in the already developed chassis.

Porsche did take one of Audis leading engineers away from them, so they have a winning team so far...should be interesting.

I think the press release explains it prettty well. Some Porsche NA 911GT3 customers want to step up in categories. LMP2 likely has less sticker shock than LMP1, but maybe someone in the know could tell the forum what the cost of a decent LMP1 is compared to an LMP2.

Did I hear a rumor that the R8 was going to be retired, only to usher a R10?

If so...

Word on the street is it's an R9...and it will debut at Sebring next year.

I can't wait for the new rules, i think they'll bring a return of the big manufactuer...which means more people for audi to stomp Smiley
