Flying Lizard's Porsche at Mosport

« on: February 07, 2005, 09:50:51 pm »

After attending the Rolex 24 this past weekend, I have racing fever...

A couple of friends and I are thinking of going down for the 12 hours in March, and possibly camping out in a tent at the track.  (real camping)  I can't find any information on tent camping online.  Is it allowed?  Are there showers?  How much does it costs?  Where are the best areas?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

it's only REAL camping if you venture into green park.

$25 parking is all you'll pay. There are showers, but I recommend you do not use them at odd hours of the night, as I'd rather not wait in a long line.

My only other recomendation is to lock up your beer at night, unfortunatly some people just dont respect other people's beer.

Oh, and Daytona is to Sebring as an old folks home is to spring break.

Actually, If I were you I would pull an old sebring trick. Bring an extra tent and pack all your beer in there. Keep it zipped up. Usually no one will disturb it.

We have to lock our coolers down way over on turn 1 as they seem to dissappear every once in a while.

If you are camping do not forget the ant killer The andro granules seem to work the best in case it rains. But the liquid works too

Now now, it's not THAT loud. I find it quite soothing actually...i sleep better at Sebring than anywhere.

And dont forget the fire ant killer for sure.

Oh, and Daytona makes you leave the track every night (save the night of the race) this isnt the case at Sebring. You're also not allowed to bring fire wood, bikes, atvs, etc. into the track so dont bother. However, you are allowed to bring in couches...which burn quite nicely.

It's just $10 for car parking, isn't it?  But $50 to park an RV?

You've only got to spend 5 minutes on sebringfans.com to realize that, while many of them may be knowledgeable fans, this race is mostly a drinking binge with some noisy cars in the background.
The focus (on that site) on alcohol consumption is really kind of depressing. I'm kind of amazed (and disappointed) that track management doesn't do anything to try and go a bit more upmarket.
If I wanted to hang with drunken louts I'd go to a British premier league game.

$10? $25? same difference...(i think PLM is $25...something is $25) Money well spent though.

I like the motorcycle ban myself...it is bad enough with cars, one can only imagine how bad it will be with motorcycles cutting through camp sites. If I recall correctly, they were banned for something like that in the first place.

If you weren't there in those days, I don't know if you can really imagine what it was like.  I've got these scattered memories like:

1970:  My dad camped with some mechanic that weighed about 280 and had this mini bike.  It was built like those really cheap mini bikes with the centrifugal clutch, just scaled up for fat people.  Had an 8 horse Briggs and Stratton I think.  The mechanic Stone was trying to start it, holding the right grip while he pulled.  When it caught fire, it revved up, and hooked up.  Stone couldn't throttle back because the throttle grip was all he had hold of.  He spun around in circles while everybody ran before he finally jetisonned it like a live hand grenade.

Same year my dad came back to the camp laughing that he ran over somebody in a sleeping bag.

There was the time my dad fell off the dirt bike drunk, right in front of a state trooper.  They had an impound yard for such events.  You could pick it back up the next day.

I remember this huge fat guy on a 3-wheel atv that would pull wheelies and bounce back on his ass.

I'm sure mom would love to hear about how dad turned me loose on the 250 dirt bike at 15 after 5 Budweisers.

Best laugh was when they had workers directing one-way traffic over the vehicle bridge by F-Troop (no traffic signals then).  All the bikes (maybe 30 or 40) would line up at the front waiting for oncoming traffic to clear.  When the signal was given there'd be a drag race over the bridge, like the start of a motocross.  The guy dropped the flag; the race was on, and right at the top of the bridge a van came over going the other way.  Everybody got on the brakes and squeezed against the rail to get by.

Worse thing about motorcycles at Sebring was the dust they stirred up.  You'd be blowing black snot till Tuesday.

I remember the big black boogers back in the mid 70's.

Not only was there lots of dust from the motorcycles, but they allowed campfires then too, and on cool nights and mornings the atmosphere kept all that smoke hoovering just above the crowd.

Your car would get totally dusted too.

Ahoy crews, I'm edtheboat guy. just up track from the walk over in the zoo (green park) across from the famely play ground. for the gen admission get there on tue nite, set up the tent or whatever in the holding feld, have your tickets before hand, and join the land rush wed morning at 6 am, but don't impose on the regulars. We've been in the same spot for 18 yrs with the same neabors on both sides for the same amount of yrs. So far there for last 2 wks all day every day, IRL,CART (champ cars) and ALMS practice and testing. Last Mon champ Audi did the track record at 1:44. the Aston martin is hot.And theres a new vettt team, not a factory team but still fast. Pasific coast team with older vett. No boat this yr. just small trav trailer, but flag pole flying stars&bars with a white strob lite on top (beacon) stop  by and hoist a few. My wife works the track hospital and alot of nurses hang there. I have not worked out how to post pics yet, have hundreds of them. edjudy@tnni.net
