I can't Limit my MADNESS to March!

« Reply #15 on: February 04, 2011, 03:31:58 pm »

I had a nice chat with Chauncey last night on FB and he says they are bringing a new "Bad Dog" to F-Troop with yr. I always liked the ceremony of digging him up again yr after yr.  Clap Clap

HELL yes it's reson to celebrate! If you didn't come to Sebring before a shower and proper toilet was available you just don't know how ruff it was. The bad thing was that when the bath house went up we lost our spicket in 10. You see I started camping in 1978 under the big pine tree that Sutherland now is under near the road. The track went past us and behind a warehouse out of site. The water hookup with multiple Y's and hoses comming off it was near where that big sand pit is now. You'd bring a hose and a shovel to bury it. This hose + a bathing suit = shower. Fun. Oh and toilet was a VERY ripe port-a-pot....period. Unless you could make it to the hairpin as that toilet house was there.

Back in the 70's, before the showers, and when I was camping in a tent, we used to leave the track and go to Lake Istapoka and take a bath.

I am doing my homework and have just come across information I am hoping longtime fans could verify. I have found that in 1986 there were propositions to install both a berm along the hairpin for increased viewing and that the first actual permanent bathroom was to be installed in Green Park - between the Hairpin and the Chicane.
That would make it the 25th anniversary for each of these amenities. Can anyone actually remember if this happened in 1986? I have not yet finished my research on this but I thought I'd "get it out now" in a manner of speaking...
Only memory I have of the old Green Park restroom facility, was one year a patron with a King Kong attitude went in a obliterated every toilet that was in the place. I mean, busted each porcelain toilet into many pieces - tanks and bowls both! . Kind of a pointless gesture, but maybe that is what led to building the new restrooms.

And you know why the new restroom has curtains instead of stall doors, right?  First year it had wood doors; they were all ripped off the hinges for the post-race bonfires.  I believe they replaced them with wood and they met the same fate a year later.

You've only got to spend 5 minutes on sebringfans.com to realize that, while many of them may be knowledgeable fans, this race is mostly a drinking binge with some noisy cars in the background.
The focus (on that site) on alcohol consumption is really kind of depressing. I'm kind of amazed (and disappointed) that track management doesn't do anything to try and go a bit more upmarket.
If I wanted to hang with drunken louts I'd go to a British premier league game.

Awww, thanks!  We're proud to announce there will be a new F-Troop Sebring Cruiser!  Look for a blue Surburban and don't forget to check inside!
