Dirk,
Can you not make your DVD player region free, most machines can be be made region free with the press of a few buttons in the right sequence.

I think the problem is more the scan-rate on the television than the region on the DVD player. US uses NTSC, Europe uses PAL. The biggest differences between the two are the horizontal pixel resolution (625 PAL vs. 525 NTSC) and the refresh rate caused by the 50 cycle power (Europe) vs. 60 cycle power (US). While data on the disk is data on the disk regardless of which format you use, I don't think you can play a NTSC formatted disk on a PAL television without first having it converted.

Yes, the PAL thing is the major stumbling block. But, if you are playing back on computer it's a matter of a region change. For instance, my Macs are set up for the US region. I can change that to a different region, but I can only do that like three times, and then it locks into that region. It appears I can set the region in the DVD programming, but doing a PAL conversion through software may look ... not so good. I'm still looking for solutions.
Anyone in PAL land should also check and see if your DVD player can change regions or do a conversion. Previous travels have proved that Europe is much more likely to allow for this than the US. If you live here and you want to play PAL... well screw you! You have to go out of your way to find a player with a built in conversion option. Lok in the set up menus and see if you can change region of format. US format is NTSC (that stands for "Never Twice the Same Color").
I'm also still trying to get down there. It won't be before Thursday mid-day, and then I have no way to get to the track. I'm looking for transport to Sebring from Orlando or Tampa on Thursday, any ideas would be appreciated.
thanks,
John
