... And when you opened up your stuff the next year (or next camping trip), Sebring would hit you in the face....that smell would waft out like it was a sealed time capsule.

OMG ... Sebring and the wide variety of aromas we associate with the place.  Originally posted this 4 years ago when I joined the forum, with a reference to the 'Sebring Smell' have to repost the below story for those that have joined since:

Years and years ago, went to Sebring with a buddy... took a cooler, actually several coolers, one for food the rest for beer.  The end of the weekend all the beer was gone (of course!), but some food remained, left the food in the cooler and drove back home to St. Pete Beach.  That would have been about '72?  '73?  Anyway, put the coolers in the garage, they got covered up, didn't think any more of it...  Moved into an apartment with some friends that had larger coolers, when we went to Sebring the following years we used those...

Joined the Navy in '79, wasn't able to make it to Sebring for a few years ... in '84 took leave just to come home for Sebring.  Went to my Grandmothers house in St. Pete Beach, and she said I could use some of her coolers, but be careful getting them out of the garage, the place smelled funny and she thought something may have crawled into that corner of the garage and died ... anyone see where this is going yet?

Pulled out the cooler that was last used about '72 and had been sitting, unopened, in a garage in St. Pete Beach, Florida since then... Opened the cooler and was physically hit in the face with the aroma of potato and macaroni salad that had been sitting for over 10 years!  My nose hairs are curling just thinking of it... my sister was in the garage, I heard a gag, she took two steps and blew chunks all over Nan's car... she couldn't eat for two days.  Nan almost fainted from the smell, had to be helped back into the house.  Neighbors two doors down said they thought their sewer was backing up.  The garbage men wouldn't empty the can the 'stuff' was thrown in, they threatened to call the police thinking we were disposing of bodies, I had to put it in the trunk of my car and take it to the dump... It was a month before the smell was entirely gone from the garage...

Well, that just almost got me in trouble....laughing uncontrollably at work!  I was referring to the smoke smell....don't think I've ever experienced anything like you've just decribed!  THANK GOD!

Since we're all reminiscing, I should mention that I'm trying to pull video from old 8mm film from the 60's and 70's. There's a few of me as just a tiny lass, looking scared shitless as bikers barrel past. The best one, however, was of the drive-over bridge--all motorcycles, and one couple are blasted out of their gord and just lay the bike down halfway down the backside of the bridge, watching the other cycles respond is hilarious!!! I'm trying to get my daughter to rip the video on her Mac--I don't have the ability in my old age. Takes a little kid. I'm so pathetic.

Last year I saw people camped close to us busted for pot and someone tazed for resisting arrest after jumping burning furniture.

It does kinda suck that since I don't drink I have to go for a little drive outside the track to enjoy a joint. Oh well, thats the price I pay for being a violent criminal I guess.

No doubt that sucks,..  It's just ironic and quite hypocritical, that they would much rather me mellow out on a joint than all rowdy on alcohol.

Oh well,..  Just show me the way to the Patron tent,..  gotta do what you gotta do!!!!

Was it just my imagination,  or was there a substantial increase in the number of police (both uniformed and plain clothed) last year?  Everything seemed a bit more subdued than in the past (even Turn 10). I hope this isn't an effort on the part of the new female sheriff to make Sebring more "family friendly."  I recently spoke with a person that was an assistant state attorney for Highlands County not too long ago.  She said the rule used to be that so long as your actions weren't to the detriment of the people around you, you were pretty much free to do whatever you wanted inside the fence. Apparently that's not the rule anymore.
the rule now is beware of the feds. plenty of plain cloths too. i tell all cherrys [first timmers] to ether get a pass out or be damn careful if you feel the need to burn one.

LMAO,..  You'd think that the Feds would have better things to do than to fuck up some end users weekend at the sebring races.  What a waste of resources and taxpayers money.

Not really,..  don't want to get into a political discussion, but the republican agenda has always had a war on drugs. (as they toast a cocktail to another "drug" bust)

I would gladly trade fireworks, firearms and firewood for firewater.

I’m cool with giving up motorcycles, golf carts, underage drinking and fighting.

All I ask in return is arson, indecent exposure and controlled substances. In moderation by consenting adults, of course.

Hard to describe anything in Green Park as being in 'moderation'.  Beer

It is a shame. Maybe lost in the youth, but 20 years ago was what I remember the most. Not to say I don't still go, but it is a lot tamer. I miss those days. It was legendary, known around the racing world, and not for the racing but good old partying. Good and bad to everything I guess. Back in the days you would hear about someone dying at the track every year as well, not good. I remember being passed out in the truck waking up and seeing the motor home right next to me burning down, Saturday night of course. Not saying this is good, just saying the Man has put his thumb down. Remember when there was no barricade coming over the bridge into Green Park (The Zoo) and it was just a mob of people till the wee hours. Ah let's bring a little of that spirit back!
