There's a puddle in my tent!

« on: February 22, 2008, 12:56:43 am »

I know you all hate anything Grand Am but I thought you might appreciate this.  It's from.......I don't know hour.......I don't even remember!  Sometime Sunday morning, I was wrecked, tired, wet, and just wanted it to be over.  Our car was already out of contention, it was disappointing.
It was my first and probably last time working a 24 hour race.  I haven't decided whether I'm sorry or relieved about that fact.

That picture says it all about Daytona.  Eyes half open, sitting on concrete, at night.  It's an endurance event for both driver and crew.

Where's your fire bottle?

That picture was taken sometime Sunday morning.  My fire bottle was sitting beside the fuel rig.  It got to the point that I was on auto pilot.  I'd fall asleep for 15 minutes and hear "FULL COURSE YELLOW, FULL COURSE YELLOW!!!"  We'd jump up and run to pit wall, and wait, and wait, and wait until a decision was made about fuel.  There wasn't a single time that we came in and didn't get at least a splash of fuel.  We (the fuelers) were the busiest people in the #07 pit that  day, night and morning.

Don't forget the drivers had nice, dry and warm trailers to sleep in between stints.  We had hard plastic chairs.  The ground looked awfully inviting except that it had rained and it was mostly wet........ .  I got about 1 1/2 hours of sleep in 36 (or so) hours.

I looked even worse by 9PM Sunday night!   Shocked grin uglystupid2 uglystupid2 uglystupid2

The race had been over for seven hours at that point, so that was your fault!  Drinker

I guess she just has to 'settle' for being a real woman!

Well, not really ... as she said, the drivers have the plush, comfortable motorhomes.  That's where the drivers head after the race.  The crew, on the other hand, have to pull everything out of the pit box & garage area, haul it all back to the trailers and get everything packed to hit the road.  So, a 24 hour race really can be a 36 hour endurance event for the crews.

Sounds like the build up for a joke. All that's missing is the third guy and the punch line.

Um ... My training regimen is a little different.  I watched Sandy (my wife) drink a couple glasses of wine and a flaming coffee after dinner tonight...   rolleyes

I hope you mean the drink. You'd be a sick bastard if you froze some Mexican cuties.
