Unfair. Unbalanced. Unmedicated.

« on: October 22, 2007, 02:15:47 am »

Okay, the 2007 season is in the books ... and historically this forum usually slows down for the next three months or so, until we start making our preparations for Sebring.  In an attempt to keep a little life in the forum:

What would you like to see in ALMS in 2008?

I'll start with my wish list:

1)  Longer races.  2:45 should be bare minimum, after all isn't this supposed to be a sports-car endurance league?  And, 90 minutes at Long Beach?  That was almost embarrassingly short.  4 hours at Laguna Seca was a good race - maybe a 6 hour event or two thrown in.

2)  Get rid of the damn city courses.  You that live in St. Pete probably won't like that, but I have no use for temporary street courses.  You want a race?  Build a damn race track, don't throw a bunch of jersey barriers around downtown screwing everyone's life for a week.

3)  More diesels ... or less diesels.  Was glad to see the Penske Porsche's giving Audi a run for their money (more on that below), but Audi had no competition at all in P1.

4)  Porsche P1 Prototype.  They've proved the RS Spyder in P2 can run with the Audi in P1 ... now, go P1 and with the extra horsepower let's see some competition.

5)  I apologize in advance to all you 'Vette fans - but more than two cars in GT1.  If they can't, eliminate the class or slow the cars and combine it with GT2.

6)  Something needs to be done to separate the factory teams from the privateers in the protptypes.  I know they announced at Le Mans this year rules that take effect in 2012 (or something like that) which would make the P1's more factory entries, P2 more privateers.  The amount of money & engineering a factory like Porsche or Acura can throw at a car will always put them ahead of the BK Mazda's, Dyson Racing or Intersport teams.

7)  Jumbotrons.  They need to bring those back the jumbotrons around the tracks.

I had a couple more in mind when I started, but that should be enough to get some discussion going...

Cheers,

...agree on 1), 3), 4), 5), 6) and if I were a resident of the city where the street course is taking place then I would also agree with 2). Maybe I have been living in the dark but wtf is a Jumbotron?Huh?

Same goes for me gab. As an extra on 5, a Corvettefan who is also a racefan can only agree to that. It's no fun in that class like this. In LMS there where about 7-8 contenders in GT1, that should be possilbe somehow for ALMs to I think?

LMS has an arguably better grid than ALMS because their races are longer, enabling the teams to get more paying drivers in to share the costs. However, the longer the race is, the harder it is to get a good tv deal (and therefore sponsorship deals) , so there's a bit of a catch 22.

Competition, that's all I want and by bending the rules towards Porsche, ALMS have succeeded in offering great racing between the Porsches and Audis. GT2 has been memorable as well this year. I can't think of one race in LMS that provided me as much entertainment as in ALMS, so I would prefer the ALMS set up over LMS. I won't call it endurance racing, I'll call it sportscar racing (with an occasional endurance race) and enjoy the action.

Back to what I want: I want Aston Martin and Maserati to rejoin GT1. I want Spyker to do a full season ALMS. I want Racing for Holland to relocate to the States. I want Peugeot and Audi to battle all season. I want to hear a diesel. I want it to be March.

The large-screen displays around the track with a TV display.  Had them two years ago at Sebring, one right at Turn 10.  With only a portion of the track visible regardless of your location, lets spectators see what's going on in other places on the track.

Totally agree with the longer race length and dumping the street circuits. Three hour absolute minimum with more events finishing in the dark. I would like to see the DBR9's back in GT1 and see Ford jump in with a GT.  A stand alone date at Mid-Ohio would be nice.

Nice? Hell, I'd be willing to kidnap Tony George and hold him ransom so that IRL wouldn't run that weekend. And afterward, i'd hand him over to YFDS to do with him as they please...

But to throw in my two cents, some more GT1 is definitely needed, and it would be very nice to see some of the smaller teams have a chance of winning again

You've only got to spend 5 minutes on sebringfans.com to realize that, while many of them may be knowledgeable fans, this race is mostly a drinking binge with some noisy cars in the background.
The focus (on that site) on alcohol consumption is really kind of depressing. I'm kind of amazed (and disappointed) that track management doesn't do anything to try and go a bit more upmarket.
If I wanted to hang with drunken louts I'd go to a British premier league game.

I wish that they would stop gobbling up camping space by those damn exhibits on the midway. I use to able to camp near the hairpin for years until the damn hotel showed up. Now they are restricting our camping area more by squeezing us into about a 100 yrd area. Pretty soon the only place to camp with be in Greenpark, so you think its crowded now?

My wish is for a total and complete ban on air restrictors. Open up the air flow and make the drivers use the throttle to manage the pace.

My camp mates wish that I would learn how to make a decent bloody mary. In their words " less Mary...more Bloody"

Sorry, Wheel ... the response appears to be, well, underwhelming?   Grin   coolsmiley
