Don't forget that ALMS has been around longer than the LMS, I think, but not sure, this is only the fourth year in a row for the new style LMS. Attendance at the races is indeed less than ALMS, but I think that combining ALMS races with CART races, like in St Petes, also draws a bigger crowd. Here LMS is the big attraction, support races are usually fun to see, but not really high end racing. I will be going to Le Mans this year, as well as Spa 1000 km and hopefully Silverstone 1000 km.
Crowds are getting better every year, so hopefully TV in Europe will pick up on it. Formula 1 still receives the biggest attention

in our race car broadcasts, but they are getting better at it.
